From Crowdfunding Prototype to Purchase: How Indiegogo moves to e-commerce

Having been a crowdfunding consultant and helped dozens of creators go through the ideation process into the market, I am intrigued by the latest development by Indiegogo-IndieShop. IndieShop is an e-commerce platform that has brought much-needed fresh air both for the creators and early adopters.

I've seen brilliant creators struggle for years with the "what next?" after their successful crowdfunding campaigns. IndieShop is an elegant gap-bridging into which that talented crowd is looking for: a dedicated marketplace for already-proven crowdfunded products. From the beginning of the beta in May 2024, it was boasting more than 40 innovative products showcased, and that, really, is just the start.

Indiegogo goes a step further. They want to make sure it doesn't stop at digital; they want to take successful crowdfunding projects into the stores themselves. I was someone who guided creators through product launches, and let me tell you, this is huge. Think of the backers actually being able to touch, feel, and try out things before backing them. Bring the "try before you buy" concept to crowdfunding.

For creators and backers alike, this is more than just a new shopping destination; it means crowdfunding is maturing into a full-fledged retail channel. A person who lives and breathes crowdfunding, I believe we are at a pivotal moment in how innovative products make their way to market.
